The Coolest Phones on the Block

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Here’s a rundown of the most popular phones in September of 2008. We have RCR Wireless to thank for the round-up. Enjoy!

#1 Blackberry Curve

Enjoying the number one spot is RIM’s Blackberry Curve. Available from all major US providers, it’s no surprise this smooth, rounded superphone is topping the list. The Curve comes in a variety of colors (titanium, silver, red, black, gold, and my personal favorite - pink) and has full internet and email capabilities. With a powerful camera and versatile mini-USB charger, the Curve is quite the universally friendly phone.

#2 Apple iPhone

The much-hyped newest 3G edition from Apple comes in 2nd - a pretty impressive feat considering their exclusive deal with AT&T and the expensive, mandatory data plan that comes along with it. Another hurdle the iPhone overcame is the flurry of problems when it first arrived. It looks like the Mac followers are a loyal, and as it turns out, expansive group.

#3 LG Dare

The LG Dare is Verizon’s answer to the iPhone, and the debut appears to have been a success. Occupying 7.9% of all cell phone purchases in September, the Dare kept touch-screen-wanting CDMA owners happy. In a slightly boxier housing than the iPhone, the Verizon utilized good advertising and a lack of alternatives to push the Dare into the number three spot.

 #4 Blackberry Pearl

A smaller version of the Curve, RIM’s other ultra-popular, found-at-all-carriers cell phone, the Pearl, made the cut as well. Without a full QWERTY keyboard, but with a smaller, easier-to-tote package, as well as a smaller pricetag, the 8100 series of phones has found a nice niche with the new-to-smartphone demographic.

#5 LG Voyager

Rounding out the top 5 is the LG Voyager. The 2nd LG to make the cut, the Voyager utilizes a full touchscreen AND a full tactile QWERTY keyboard when you open it up. At the end of the day, Verizon Wireless seems to be the big winner, as it offers 4 of the 5 top cell phones we see here.

New Nokias and HTC Drops the Dream

Monday, August 25th, 2008

What a beautiful Monday… Just getting toward the end of summer, with cool mornings and warm evenings, this week is starting off right. Especially when you consider the new handsets with which the tech world is blessing us. From Japanese concepts to those Nokias we were promised, here are some of the highlights in cell-phone news for this week.

A Pair of New Nokias

Nokia said we’d have a couple of new products to toy with this week, and they have followed through on their word. Today the N79 and N85 are launched, giving us a peak at yet another potential iPhone killer (the N85) that is rumored to mirror Apple’s precious candy-bar, full touch-screen shape and low, low price, when purchased with a plan.

The Nokia N85

The Google Phone is Here! While we’ve been hearing much about the HTC Dream for some time, the first Android phone appears to be on its way. With many video trials and FCC approval, there’s no doubt that it will be any day now that we might be able to hold this beauty in our hands. With amazing screen resolution and full internet access, not to mention a super-chic, smaller-than-the-iPhone body, this is share to be the phone of your Dreams.

Newest Japanese Concept Phone Inspiration: PLYWOODIf there’s any chance of this thing actually getting to market, KDDI’s Ply phone could quite possibly blow some of these other touch-screen, super-smartphones out of the water. With “an expansive touchscreen backed by a number of layers that represent the phone’s various functions”, it’s rumored the Ply comes equipped with a printer, a pico-projector and (although I’m not sure why) an analog clock. While it may be inspired by a particularly unattractive, I’m a big fun of the pink, layered look the mock up is sporting on Engadget.com.

Apple Under Fire — Literally!

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Apple’s Cupertino campus caught blaze late Tuesday night as firefighters put out a three-alarm fire that burned for more than three hours.  According to mercurynews.com, the Santa Clara County Fire Department says the three-alaram fire scorched the roof and the second level at one of the six buildings on the company’s campus.  The fire was extinguished early this morning and no one was injured.

Deputy Chief Hal Rooney, of Santa Clara County Fire, said the fire may have started under an air conditioning unit on the second floor.  Apple workers in the building first called in the fire, fearing a potential fireon the roof because of smoke in the area, Rooney said.  The fire was reported shortly after 10 p.m. and it took roughly an hour to bring it under control by more the 60 firefighters.

What Will Apple Do Now?

Rooney said that there are no exact estimates on how much damage has been done to the building on Apple’s campus.  Fear not, as I am sure Steve Jobs, President and CEO of Apple Inc., will take care of it all.  Although this is a sad sight for Apple and its employees, there is one punch line in the story that only Apple lovers will appreciate.  After the Apple employees found the smoke coming from the building and reported it to police, they continued on their daily lives … and snapped photos of the blaze with their graphically-enhanced Apple iPhone.  Only you, Apple, only you.
