An Early Arrival - The G1 Already Shipping to T-Mob Customers

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

If you pre-ordered the innovative Google phone, the G1, get excited - it’s coming early! A rarity for cell phones to even arrive on time, the lucky T-Mobile customers that were so excited for their Android-based smartphone are rumored to have already received shipping information specifying delivery by the 21st of October… which happens to be the day before the stores will receive it.

This iPhone killer has already hit 1.5 million preorders, and this bump before hitting stores should help boost those numbers substantially. While these huge pre-order values are currently just a rumor - not yet confirmed nor denied by T-Mobile - they’ll be there in no time either way. As the first phone powered by the Android OS, T-Mob’s goals of 500,000 units by the end of the year, and 2 million by the end of next year, seem more than reasonable.

For a hands-on review, check out this video from Phone Scoop:

Quick Facts on the Google super-phone:

  • These presale orders were intended to ship on or around 11/10/08 (Lucky us!) and were ONLY for existing T-Mobile customers. Great call, T-Mob, show those customers they are valued.

  • With a 2-year plan, the G1 costs $179 (ahem… a little nudge to a familiar competitor, maybe?)

  • The G1 is equipped with a touch-screen, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a trackball, making it an extremely accessible smartphone.

  • While the G1 is obviously meant as an iPhone rival, it’s important to also look at what is debuting around the same time as the Google smartphone. The G1 will be battling the likes of the Blackberry Storm (from Verizon) and a few other HTC phones as well, from a service provider competition standpoint.

New Nokias and HTC Drops the Dream

Monday, August 25th, 2008

What a beautiful Monday… Just getting toward the end of summer, with cool mornings and warm evenings, this week is starting off right. Especially when you consider the new handsets with which the tech world is blessing us. From Japanese concepts to those Nokias we were promised, here are some of the highlights in cell-phone news for this week.

A Pair of New Nokias

Nokia said we’d have a couple of new products to toy with this week, and they have followed through on their word. Today the N79 and N85 are launched, giving us a peak at yet another potential iPhone killer (the N85) that is rumored to mirror Apple’s precious candy-bar, full touch-screen shape and low, low price, when purchased with a plan.

The Nokia N85

The Google Phone is Here! While we’ve been hearing much about the HTC Dream for some time, the first Android phone appears to be on its way. With many video trials and FCC approval, there’s no doubt that it will be any day now that we might be able to hold this beauty in our hands. With amazing screen resolution and full internet access, not to mention a super-chic, smaller-than-the-iPhone body, this is share to be the phone of your Dreams.

Newest Japanese Concept Phone Inspiration: PLYWOODIf there’s any chance of this thing actually getting to market, KDDI’s Ply phone could quite possibly blow some of these other touch-screen, super-smartphones out of the water. With “an expansive touchscreen backed by a number of layers that represent the phone’s various functions”, it’s rumored the Ply comes equipped with a printer, a pico-projector and (although I’m not sure why) an analog clock. While it may be inspired by a particularly unattractive, I’m a big fun of the pink, layered look the mock up is sporting on Engadget.com.

A Little Diddy for the Samsung Omnia

As talks of the Android phone are spinning around

And the HTC Diamond is gaining ground

Sammy brought its A-game with this new phone

The Samsung Omnia is the phone to take home

A Glance at the Samsung i900 Omnia

Thanks to Engadget Mobile, we have some new information on the brand new Samsung Omnia.  It’s jam-packed with speed (although it won’t be on the 3G network!) and its specs are amazing.  Catch this … 7.2Mbps HSDPA 2100, quadband EDGE, 5 megapixel autofocus camera, 3.2-inch capacitive WQVGA touchscreen, GPS, Windows Mobile 6.1, WiFi, and 8 or 16GB of Flash with microSD expansion, all wrapped in a tight little brushed metal case.  The Samsung marketing team really put together a package unit for this one as it comes in a carbon fiber-looking case to make it “awe” worthy.  And is it ever.

Specs and Features Galore

Engadget Mobile did a full review and exploration of the Samsung Omnia.  Overall, the consensus was great and the user interface was something that other manufacturers have not tried … no stylus pen is going to be an adjustment for many smartphone users, but Samsung wanted to be different.  And sometimes different needs to be extreme.  Be proud Sammy, because you’ve done good.
