Holiday Ideas for the Gadgeteer You Love the Most

October 29th, 2008

With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s about that time to think about festivities, travels, and most importantly - gifts! Lucky for you, gadgets make great stocking stuffers! Technology has spread into every piece of our lives, which means there’s a technological gift that’s a great fit for everyone on your list.

Cell Phone Skins make a great gift! Inexpensive enough to slip a couple into all the stockings, and thin enough to blend in well with the receiver’s style and everyday life, while protecting his or her phone.

A Spare Battery is a welcome edition to anyone’s arsenal of tech equipment. We all could use a little extra power to keep us going. This is a perfect gift for someone who has had their phone for a bit, and may need an extra boost to keep it going until their next renewal.

Bluetooth Headsets make a great treat for almost anyone. These gadgets sync to your cell phone and allow hands-free communication. This is especially useful for that friend that’s always on the phone and on the road. Keep him or her safe while gabbing on the go.

A brand new navigation system is sure to brighten someone’s day! Check out Gammoth’s GPS Devices for a great higher-end gift for the loved one in your life that always seems to be lost. Maybe for that husband of yours who “never needs directions”?

An External Hard Drive is another must-have. Keeping all that precious information on your PC safe in case the unthinkable happens, external hard drives are a relatively inexpensive and extremely reliable way to make sure you are prepared in the event of any informational disaster.

Cell Phone Cases are one of the best gift ideas this year. With the barrage of high-end smartphones coming out in the second half of 2008, keeping your cell phone safe is on everyone’s mind. A cell phone case designed to custom fit your phone is a great, personal gift that will definitely be used.

Blackberry Bold Free From Contract - for Nearly $700

October 28th, 2008

When news broke recently that the Bold was coming to AT&T at a after-rebate, with-2-year-contract price of $299.99, people were not only a bit surprised (how well will the Bold compete with the 2/3 the price iPhone?) but also quite curious as to what the MSRP would be without the rebates and contracts.

Best Buy’s site:

The news is in! Best Buy now has the Bold posted on their site for a cool $679.99. This means if you are looking to buy the Bold no-strings-attached, you should expect to pay over double the already-lofty price you’d get if you stopped in to your local AT&T store and made the two year commitment. This intrigues me, especially since RIM is releasing a slew of new Blackberrys in the next few months, and I’m curious as to how they intend to price those gadgets. Between the Bold, Storm, new Curve, and flip Pearl, there’s a broad variety of demographics RIM seems to be attempting to reach, and I wonder if the price points will vary as much.

Thanks, Engadget & BGR for the info!

My phone is broken… Now what?!

October 27th, 2008

We’ve all been there… that fateful moment when you realize that thing that you just did - that really stupid thing - just ruined your cell phone. So what to do now? Freak out? Kick things? Throw it? While these might seem like a good idea initially, there are some more productive actions to take in that tragic moment.

Dilemma #1: You went for a spontaneous dip in the lake last night - super fun, but as soon as you got out, you realized your new iPhone was in your pocket the whole time.

Solution: You may have killed it for good, but there’s a chance you didn’t. First order of business, take the battery out. We all know electricity and liquid don’t mix. If you try to turn the phone on, you’re just coursing electricity through the water-laden phone. This could fry important connections that would have been salvageable. Next, dissect and dry the phone. If you have a GSM phone, this means removing and drying your SIM, and also the components of the cell phone itself. Regardless of your phone’s technology, remove as much of the housing as possible, to expose as much of the phone as you can to air and to allow your paper towel to reach as much moisture as possible. While you want to dry the phone, remember - no blow-drying at this point! This could push air deeper into the phone, and damage more than it will help. After you’ve done all this, place the phone on an absorbent surface - such as a towel or thick napkins. While you’re following these steps, consider checking with a cell phone repair shop. With special tools and products, and the ability to replace specific parts if you did destroy the cell, this will be your best bet for a full recovery. Both iPhoneRepair.com and Gammoth do full cell phone repair service - including water damage repair.

Dilemma #2: You’re running, jamming to the music on your Blackberry and the phone mysteriously flies from your hands and lands directly in your jogging path. Before you realize it’s even gone, your foot comes down you’ve smashed the poor thing to pieces.

Solution: Pick it up. All of it. If it’s in one piece or twenty, try to get as much as possible. The only exception here is the screen - there’s no use in risking your fingertips here. If the glass is shattered, the screen will need to be replaced. Even the most skilled technician can’t reassemble a broken screen, without replacing it. If there are scatted buttons, a trackball, hinge holders, or anything non-shattered-glass, gather the remains. Get to repair shop. Seriously, get the phone to a repair shop at this time. Don’t attempt to super glue the buttons back on, or open things up to take care of yourself. Gammoth’s repair shop sees so many phones that are destroyed much further by an ambitious do-it-yourselfer than the original long fall to the ground. With bulk pricing on parts and screens, we’ll professionally install anything that needs replacing, and we’ll use high quality parts at a lower price than you’ll have access to.

Dilemma #3: You can’t hear them. They can’t hear you. It won’t charge. When you press the keys, nothing happens. Something’s not working, and you can’t figure out why!

Solution: In this scenario you didn’t do anything wrong, but you’re still stuck with a useless cell phone, and a big problem. As your main means of communication, a cell phone that isn’t performing at one hundred percent can really interfere with your life. The only solution here is to visit a technician. If you’re having microphone issues, speaker issues, keypad issues, etc the best course of action is to get the phone to a professional for an expert analysis and repair of the problem. As mentioned before, a DIY repair can cause more harm than good, and will elongate that painful period you have without your cell phone. The only exception to this rule is if you’re having charging problems. While there’s a good chance you could have a bad charging port, it is also possible that your battery is dead or your charger is broken. It may be a time-saver to try replacing these first, but if you’d rather wait to spend the money, a technician will be able to let you know this, also.

I hope this helps! It is a horrible feeling to hurt something that is such a huge part of your everyday life. With these tips, iPhone Repair, and Gammoth cell phone repair, you’ll be able to extend the life of your gadgets as far as possible.
