It is official that T-Mobile will launch the first 3G network (UMTS) in New York City tomorrow, May 1. T-Mobile will be one of the first carriers to release the 3G network, although many other carriers will be quick to follow.
What is 3G?
3G stands for third generation. It is the “next generation” of our wireless network, following the current GSM network. 3G is a new technology that will be able to better support wireless voice calls and data capabilities on the network. Since the release of smart phones, data capabilities have needed improvement and the 3G network will be more supportive of these data needs.
In a release by T-Mobile found on TmoNews.com, it states that, “T-Mobile plans to expand to more than 20 markets by the end of 2008, and will also offer new devices and innovative applications that make the most of our 3G network …”
Way to get the ball rolling T-Mobile … now let’s just get everyone on the bandwagon!
***UPDATE*** T-Mobile is pulling the string on our hearts by providing VOICE ONLY 3G … 3G for data will be released at a later time. Here is what a post from Engadget said late this afternoon:
“3G is the next generation of our wireless network, following our current GSM network. In this early phase of our network evolution, 3G is a new technology for carrying wireless voice calls and supporting existing data capabilities on our network. In future phases, this next generation network will power ‘high-speed’ (3G) products and services that connect customers in new and exciting ways. … Inform customers who are interested in high-speed data that the first phase of our 3G roll out supports voice only.“ (Thanks, Engadget!)
