“Get Your BlackBerry Out of Bed” from CNN.COM

I was looking through some CNN articles and stumbled upon this article about taking your BlackBerry to bed and when it’s time to draw the line.  Many couples are able to work together and communicate with eachother what is appropriate technology to bring to the bedroom, but in other cases, bringing the BlackBerry in the bedroom has caused some marital troubles.

“According to a recent Solutions Research Group study of nearly 5,000 Americans, more than 63 percent of BlackBerry users take the device into the bathroom. And 37 percent of laptop owners “frequently” use their computers in the bedroom.  I’ve been known to answer the phone from the shower,” says Flannery, whose PR business includes crisis management work. “And I call the bathroom my husband’s ‘conference room.’”

Luckily, the pair is well-matched, digitally speaking, so taking care of business — even in the bathroom — isn’t an issue: “We both have a similar approach to business and customer service, so it works for us,” she says.

But others have a more lopsided approach to laptop love, as Steven Porricelli, a 36-year-old high school teacher from Cranston, Rhode Island, can attest.

“Technology is a necessary evil,” Porricelli says of his wife, Jane, who runs the family-oriented Web site pinksandblues.com. “She’s always texting in one hand and Twittering (an online social network and messaging service) on the other. I’ve woken up before and she’ll be zonked out in bed with the laptop on her lap. It’s insane. Sometimes I just want to throw her stuff out the window.” … view full article here.

When Should You Draw the Line?

Technology is a necessary evil, but one that we live with because the benefits we reap from it are immeasurable.  So when is it time to draw the line for technology in the bedroom?  Are TV’s ok in the bedroom?  What about cell phones?  And laptops?  Now our big question, should we allow the smartphone in the bedroom?

I understand that people nowadays have more pressures from the working world, but when you are at home, shouldn’t you be “at home?”  When you walk through your front door, shouldn’t you breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the family you have come home to?  Don’t get me wrong, I believe that the technology we have today is the best it has ever been and it is making many things “happen,” but do we really need a BlackBerry in the bedroom?  Let me know your thoughts because I am very interested in this debate …
