T-Mobile Launches 3G Network in NYC May 1!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

It is official that T-Mobile will launch the first 3G network (UMTS) in New York City tomorrow, May 1.  T-Mobile will be one of the first carriers to release the 3G network, although many other carriers will be quick to follow.

What is 3G?

3G stands for third generation.  It is the “next generation” of our wireless network, following the current GSM network.  3G is a new technology that will be able to better support wireless voice calls and data capabilities on the network.  Since the release of smart phones, data capabilities have needed improvement and the 3G network will be more supportive of these data needs.

In a release by T-Mobile found on TmoNews.com, it states that, “T-Mobile plans to expand to more than 20 markets by the end of 2008, and will also offer new devices and innovative applications that make the most of our 3G network …”

Way to get the ball rolling T-Mobile … now let’s just get everyone on the bandwagon!

***UPDATE***   T-Mobile is pulling the string on our hearts by providing VOICE ONLY 3G … 3G for data will be released at a later time.  Here is what a post from Engadget said late this afternoon:

3G is the next generation of our wireless network, following our current GSM network. In this early phase of our network evolution, 3G is a new technology for carrying wireless voice calls and supporting existing data capabilities on our network. In future phases, this next generation network will power ‘high-speed’ (3G) products and services that connect customers in new and exciting ways. … Inform customers who are interested in high-speed data that the first phase of our 3G roll out supports voice only.“  (Thanks, Engadget!)

Apple iPhone Being Released in Canada … Finally!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

The Apple iPhone has been around for some time now … well, not quite a year but quickly approaching its one year birthday.  As the demand is getting greater, people are constantly trying to get their paws on these media-loving devices.  But just recently, it has been announced that the iPhone will finally be released in “Oh, Canada.”  Rogers Wireless struck a deal with Apple that has finally brought the highly sought after device to Canada after months of speculation.  Canadians and Apple are bound to be smitten after this deal … because it is the best for both worlds, eh?

What Would You Do for an iPhone?

With the release of the 3G iPhone approaching (still talks about June) and the new software development kit (SDK) this summer, I think iPhone’s will be flying off the shelf and the demand will be much greater than the supply.  So we are starting early at Gammoth …. what would YOU do for an iPhone, given that it has all the new bells and whistles?

Check out this list that was collaborated in the summer of 2007 … and fill in your response.  I would love to hear the craziest story of what you would do to get the 3G iPhone … please, all crazy stories are welcome.
